Why Rojgar Samachar is important for job-seekers in India ?
In countries like India, where traditions have much importance than modernization a very little part of every process is organised. “Jugaad” has always been the master-key to avoid long and systematic procedures. As India achieved its independence from Britain the largest job providers were the big private business corporation (although people had little trust over the private sector in those days), like Tata & Sons, Larsen and Tubro etc and primarily the Government of India. Most of the economy depended upon the agriculture sector. Jobs were very few and job advertisements were not so common.
Larger population of the country was living in the villages. The young and educated people in the villages had slight knowledge about job openings and availability. In case of any job opening the notice was published in any of the local newspaper which villager were deprived of. Therefore these people relied on vocal conversations, relatives living in the cities and friends working in the recruiting organization for information (thus the jugaad was a crucial advantage). Due to such disorganised system of information the job was bagged by the people who had better contacts with the informants rather than the talented people with no contacts and source of information. With time the needs and demands of the Indian population evolved and so the requirement of jobs by the starting of the 70’s corruption was at its height and the unemployment was quickly growing even the Bollywood movies went off track from melodramatic and romantic cinema to action pack movies with similar themes of a young unemployed hero, who was either a factory worker or searching for jobs and money to feed its family.
Under the leadership of Shrimati Indira Gandhi an initiative was taken to provide the youth of the country with a reliable source of information for job openings. Employment news came into existence in 1976 with the purpose of providing Information about job vacancies, apprenticeship and training programmes, and admission notices related to professional courses and results of recruitment examinations. The immediate effects of employment news were sudden rise in the applications and candidates, decrease in agents cheating people for jobs and also bribes in the job market and gave a chance for fair opportunity to everyone. As the time passed the Employment News became popular among the youth of India.
Even in the modern times more than half of the Indian population lives in the rural area. Many of the villages are still deprived of electricity and most of them do not have any sort of internet connectivity. In the rural area system of information channelling has not changed much. In a society in which a very few people have access to internet and a very few have knowledge to operate computer the print medium still has the highest level of importance.
